The 2019 Great Australian Rally was held at Cruden Farm, Langwarrin. The Rally attracts hundreds of veteran, vintage and classic cars of many makes and model.  Volvo Club of Victoria members presented 11 cars from a diverse range of Volvo models from the 1960’s through to the early 1990’s.  It was a great day showcasing some of the best examples of the history of motoring as well as special displays of current electric vehicle and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle technology, all in the beautiful gardens and paddocks of Cruden Farm.  Volvo Club of Victoria members attending, when not looking at the 800 cars on display, enjoyed answering questions about their cars and the shade of a tree for refreshments and conversations.

The Annual display day has been run and won for another year, this years event at a new location in Yarra Glen which provided a different feel to the day and a very different drive to the venue, trading the city for the country.

It was certainly the show of the 120, a broad range of 120s showed off some great looking cars and providing some great photo opportunities. A growing number of the moderns was a welcome change to the Volvo display area at the AOMC Classic Showcase and it is likely there will be some revised categories next year to better represent the Volvos attending the annual day. While the prime oddity was the single car category (which was not all bad, I finally won a prize! – Ed), making decisions for the modern category was particularly difficult due to the range and high quality of car on display.

Thanks to all who made the trip to Yarra Glen to represent the club, it is appreciated as we had a great turn out and showed Volvo proud.

Volvo Ocean Race classic Volvo display https://volvovic.org.au/blog/2017/12/30/volvo-ocean-race-classic-volvo-display/ Sat, 30 Dec 2017 02:21:32 +0000 http://volvovic.org.au/?p=3499 The Volvo Ocean Race is a major international event held every three years and it recently took port in Docklands, Melbourne between Christmas and New Year. The Volvo Ocean Race is a major international event held every three years and it recently took port in Docklands, Melbourne between Christmas and New Year. After a little prod from a club member (unfortunately I forget who – great work though!) the VCoV was invited to bring along a few classic cards for display on the ‘Family Day’ at Docklands.

On the morning there was a diverse range of cars for the passing public to peruse as a simple demonstration of the history of Volvo in Australia. The oldest there were a couple of 1800s, a few 200s including two coupes – a 242, and a 262 (both later prize winners at the Annual Display Day – see other story), a sneaky import not available in Australia, the 780 coupe, and a couple of newish models that while easily 10 years old still have the lines and styling of the current Volvo range. Does style that good ever fade?

The event was managed by Volvo International (not the Australian arm of Volvo) and they had with them some current cars from international markets, one being a yet-to-be-released in Australia XC40 model, and also a truck simulator. I have heard that the XC40 that was on display will be released in Australia soon, so look out for it. Another display car was a VOR optioned XC70 (primarily a trim upgrade, no jack stays in place of seat belts or revised helm) which drew a lot of attention due to the great colours used and improved seats, so lets hope it is available in Australia – definitely one to look out for if in the market for a new Volvo.

There were a few club members trying their skills in the truck simulator too, and also a few on the helm simulator (see pics). As mentioned in the President’s Prattle, this was the first time the VOR had a classic Volvo display as part of their roadshow and they seemed quite happy with the display. Lets hope in three years when they come around again we can wander down to Docklands and fly the blue flag with them all again.

The corporate display had a photo shot of what it may be like aboard one of the Volvo 65s, the helm is quite a lot bigger than the guys are used to.

Annual Tune-up day at Voldat https://volvovic.org.au/blog/2017/12/02/annual-tune-up-day-at-voldat/ Sat, 02 Dec 2017 07:59:22 +0000 http://volvovic.org.au/?p=3468 The annual tune up day was well attended with nearly 15 cars going up on the hoist for the once over even in rather wet and almost wild weather conditions.  …]]>

The annual tune up day was well attended with nearly 15 cars going up on the hoist for the once over even in rather wet and almost wild weather conditions.  It was well enough attended to spike the interest of some neighbours who wandered in for a look at some of the cars after their gym session too (from the gym across the road)!

As always, John and the two Mark’s offered their time and workshop to give club members the opportunity to have a look at their cars from the underside.  There were the wise eyes of John and the Mark’s on what needed attention, and the wise mouth of one of the Mark’s for the inappropriate.

The cars ranged from a couple of 1800’s through a 240, a few 740’s and a couple of late model front wheel drives like the V70 and S60.  While there are many new Volvo’s in the club now it seems the old ones just keep on going!

As the only ‘free to members’ day for a mechanical inspection it is a day well worth attending.

Big thanks to John of Voldat www.voldat.com.au and Mark Richardson of VP Tuning www.vptuning.com.au for the location and Mark from Berry’s Motor Group for the paperwork www.berrymotorgroup.com.au  Thanks also goes to Doug for the pics.

The Volvo Club was given a privileged position, celebrating 90 Years of Volvo, at the Historic Sandown Races in November.  The display was over two days and some hardy souls turned up for both days while other elected to one day only.  Grahame Sutcliffe allowed the club to display the Brock / Scott 12 Hour racing car and it was not only the centre piece of the display but also a major attraction.  Saturday saw a number of Volvo’s completing two parade laps at the end of the day including the 12 hour car.  We would like to thank the VHRR for their continued support to the Volvo Club of Victoria Inc.

Parade lap photos are courtesy of sdpics.com and these and other photos of the day are available to purchase from their webpage.
